Finding New Names in Vintage Categories

Maybe there are certain kinds of names that you really like–flower or color names, say, or virtue names– but you’re reluctant to use one of the more obvious examples, the epidemically popular ones, attractive though they may be.  Well, there’s no reason you have to limit yourself to those few; more and more parents are digging deeper into those appealing categories and coming up with  newer sounding choices.

Take flower names. If you want to move beyond Rose, Daisy, Lily and even Poppy and Violet, you might consider these more exotic blooms that are beginning to come into their own:

  AMARYLLIS

  ASTER

  AZALEA

  HYACINTH

IRIS (not exotic, but long neglected)

  JONQUIL

  LILAC

  LOTUS

  MARIGOLD

  PRIMROSE

  TULIP

Similarly with gems–Ruby, Crystal and Jade aren’t the only jewels in the case.  Consider:

  AMETHYST

  EMERALD

  OPAL

  PEARL

  SAPPHIRE

  TOPAZ

  TURQUOISE

And speaking of Turquoise, there are also some richly hued colors beyond Scarlet and Siena:

  AQUA

  AUBURN

  AZURE

  CITRON

  FUCHSIA

  HAZEL

  INDIGO

  LAVENDER

  MAUVE

  OLIVE

  RUSSET

  SILVER

  TITIAN

  UMBER

Perhaps you like the idea of an avian name, but are tired of Robin and Raven.  How about:

  ALOUETTE (lark in French)

  AVIS

  BIRDIE

  DOVE

  LARK

  ORIOLE

  TEAL

  WREN

And finally we come to Virtue Names.  Hope, Faith and Grace certainly aren’t the only righteous names out there–also worthy of consideration:

  AMITY

  CHARITY

  CLARITY

  HONOR

  JUSTICE

  MERCY

  PATIENCE

  PRUDENCE

  SERENITY

  TRUTH/TRUE

  VERITY

Girl Names
Tiger Woods Baby Name Charlie, a Sibling for Sam. But Which Is The Boy and Which Is The Girl?
Dec 23, 2024
Charlie and Sam are typical of an emerging pattern linking two current trends: nicknames and ambigender names. Sam followed on the avalanche of Samanthas, often called Sam, which resulted in some parents cutting straight to the short form–Denise Richards, for one, used it for her daughter in 2004. And Charlie,...
Yes, Virginia, Your Name Could Make a Comeback
Dec 23, 2024
It’s a lovely place name starting with the fashionable V and carrying a rich history, so why has Virginia faded from view while other classic names have held their own? Last year, for example, there were close to 13,000 new little Elizabeths and only 564 Virginias. So what’s the problem...
Oh, Susannah!
Dec 23, 2024
When I was a little girl I wanted to be named Susie.  Cute, perky, popular: the name Susie seemed to embody all the things I wanted to be, everything not associated with prissy, proper Pamela. While I’ve come to prefer Pamela to Susie, I’m still fascinated by all the variations...
From Bertha to Angina: One Mom’s (Mostly Frustrated) Search for the Right Name
Dec 23, 2024
We found Stephany Aulenback’s wonderful blog Crooked House when she wrote about nameberry, and now we’re fans.  Here, Stephany‘s take on looking for a name for her baby girl, due in June, and finding that nothing, old or new, feels quite right. It was around Christmas time when we started...
