Finding New Names in Vintage Categories
Nov 8, 2024 2:23 AM

Maybe there are certain kinds of names that you really like–flower or color names, say, or virtue names– but you’re reluctant to use one of the more obvious examples, the epidemically popular ones, attractive though they may be.  Well, there’s no reason you have to limit yourself to those few; more and more parents are digging deeper into those appealing categories and coming up with  newer sounding choices.

Take flower names. If you want to move beyond Rose, Daisy, Lily and even Poppy and Violet, you might consider these more exotic blooms that are beginning to come into their own:

  AMARYLLIS

  ASTER

  AZALEA

  HYACINTH

IRIS (not exotic, but long neglected)

  JONQUIL

  LILAC

  LOTUS

  MARIGOLD

  PRIMROSE

  TULIP

Similarly with gems–Ruby, Crystal and Jade aren’t the only jewels in the case.  Consider:

  AMETHYST

  EMERALD

  OPAL

  PEARL

  SAPPHIRE

  TOPAZ

  TURQUOISE

And speaking of Turquoise, there are also some richly hued colors beyond Scarlet and Siena:

  AQUA

  AUBURN

  AZURE

  CITRON

  FUCHSIA

  HAZEL

  INDIGO

  LAVENDER

  MAUVE

  OLIVE

  RUSSET

  SILVER

  TITIAN

  UMBER

Perhaps you like the idea of an avian name, but are tired of Robin and Raven.  How about:

  ALOUETTE (lark in French)

  AVIS

  BIRDIE

  DOVE

  LARK

  ORIOLE

  TEAL

  WREN

And finally we come to Virtue Names.  Hope, Faith and Grace certainly aren’t the only righteous names out there–also worthy of consideration:

  AMITY

  CHARITY

  CLARITY

  HONOR

  JUSTICE

  MERCY

  PATIENCE

  PRUDENCE

  SERENITY

  TRUTH/TRUE

  VERITY

Medievalizing a Name: Elizabeth to Elisende
Nov 8, 2024
By Abby Sandel, Appellation Mountain Names from the Middle Ages are fascinating. They’re often quite similar to those parents love today, but tend to be almost entirely overlooked. Nameberry has long had the Coolator. I would call this the Medievalizer, except that sounds like a torture device. Instead, this is...
Let’s hear it for the Ola Names: Lola, Viola and Finola
Nov 8, 2024
By Linda Rosenkrantz I’ve long loved Lola, and lately I’ve been crushing on Viola and Finola–which inspired me to take a look at what other ola names there are, and was pleased to find that there are lots of options, coming from several different ethnicities. As opposed to the diminutive ina-ending, ola‘s...
Imaginative Names for Girls: Aurora, Angelou, and Elle
Nov 8, 2024
By Abby Sandel, Appellation Mountain When it comes to naming a daughter, imagination reigns.  From Hollywood birth announcements to literary powerhouses, blog babies to the most random of name spottings, a great name can come from anywhere. This week’s potential seismic name influence?  Disney’s big screen retelling of Sleeping Beauty....
What makes a name a name?
Nov 8, 2024
By Abby Sandel, AppellationMountain What makes a name real? To think bigger, what makes a word real?  That’s the question raised by English professor and language historian Anne Curzan in her TED talk. They’re long-standing questions, but the speed of our modern age means that change happens fast.  Imagine a...
