Celebrity Baby Names: Normal Names Rule
Celebrity Baby Names: Normal Names Rule
Dec 21, 2024 10:58 PM

Yes, yes, we know that Danica McKellar recently named her son after a constellation called Draco and that celebrity chef Jamie Oliver christened his first boy Buddy Bear Maurice, sister to Daisy Boo Pamela, Poppy Honey Rosie, and Petal Blossom Rainbow, thereby inciting yet another storm of stories about crazy celebrity names (okay, I admit it– we did contribute a bit of that ourselves).

But the truth of the matter is that the vast percentage of starbabies have normal, conventional, and popular –often trendy– names.  The names most often chosen by celebrities coincide strongly with the names chosen by everyone else, with very few exceptions.  And there’s proof.

I looked through our roster of high-profile celebrity births over the past decade (granted we might not have caught every single one, so let’s just preface these numbers with “at least”), curious to see not only if non-bizarre names were in the majority, but also which ones were most popular.

And here are the results—the names and how many times they were selected by celebs:

  GIRLS

  Stella — 10

  Lola —  9

  Grace –9

  Ava — 9

Dec 21, 2024
Today, Appellation Mountain‘s Abby Sandel, finds some 2013 baby name predictions embedded in this week’s Nameberry 9 newsiest names. As 2012 faded into 2013, the world welcomed many a new little life.  Re-reading birth announcements, I was struck by something. None of them received outlandish names, but every one of...
Baby Names: Once so hot, now so not
Dec 21, 2024
The history of baby names is littered with former stars that burned brightly for a decade or two, only to fade from view. It’s hard to believe, from this vantage point, that Gladys or Edna ever made the Top 20, that names such as Harold or Larry were ever popular...
British Baby Names: Two Middle Names
Dec 21, 2024
If there’s one British names trend that Berries all over the world have embraced full-heartedly, it’s the old upper class practice of giving children two middle names. Rooted in royalty as a way to honor a raft of vaulted relatives, the multiple-middle-name practice was pegged by one visitor to our...
Baby Names Trend: Camilla, Willa, Priscilla–the new killer ‘illa’ names
Dec 21, 2024
Guest blogger Angela  Mastrodonato, of Upswing Baby Names spots an impending baby names trend: names ending in ‘illa’ replacing the ubiquitous ‘ella’s. When it comes to names, a small change can make a big impact. Ella-ending names have been loved for a while for their elaborate elegance. To find fresh alternatives,...
